That was a truly wonderful moment, as David Gemmell is a hero of mine and one of the reasons I write. Malice, my debut novel, was published by Pan Macmillan in 2012 and went on to win the David Gemmell Morningstar Award for Best Fantasy Debut of 2012. I live on the south coast of the UK with my beautiful wife, three sons and my daughter, and an assortment of animals (at the moment three dogs, a horse and a lamb who thinks she's a dog). I'm also a Viking re-enactor and enjoy nothing more than standing in the shield wall with my three sons, who are as passionate about swords and axes as I am (when I'm not stuck in my coat of mail it's harder than it looks). I am the author of epic fantasy series The Faithful and the Fallen, Of Blood and Bone and The Bloodsworn Saga.

As it turns out, she is concerned with learning, too, but the fear she describes around that learning has less to do with her own ignorance and more to do with how knowledge is disseminated, how it’s made available, and to whom. The night before the meeting, I frantically Googled Hinrichs, hoping that by looking at her work I might have something halfway intelligent to say to her. Sure, I took a bunch of art history classes as an undergraduate, and I consider myself a serious fan of visual art works, but there’s a lot I don’t know, and that leaves me, at times, in a paralyzing state of intellectual FOMO. Reading that story for the first time, twenty years later, it is interesting to evaluate those responses and consider my own interpretation. Like many other science fiction fans, I had been starved of a cinematic space opera since watching Return of the Jedi (1983).Īt the time, there was considerable criticism of Verhoeven’s interpretation, with many writers suggesting it had not captured the mood and essence of Heinlein’s story. In 1998, aged 22, I went to the cinema to see Paul Verhoeven’s adaptation of Starship Troopers.
